GENDER STRATEGIES AND DISCIPLINARY PRACTICES IN RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES

CALL FOR JOURNAL PAPERS

A special issue of State, Religion, and Church in Russia and Abroad, the leading Russian language academic quarterly on religion (religion.ranepa.ru). Planned for the fall of 2018.

All religious traditions focus on gender strategies and the forms of sexual discipline within their communities. In Christianity, the discussion of sin is inconceivable without mentioning sexual deviation. How are ideas of masculinity and femininity, family and sexuality constructed and realized in various religious communities? The images of "the ideal man" and "the ideal woman," the ideals of relationships and family models are constructed on the basis of many written norms, as well as oral or even unspoken prescriptions and prohibitions. Gender strategies are influenced by social and political conditions, ecclesiology, and hermeneutics, and it is subject to modification under the pressure of specific circumstances, social changes and cultural shifts.
Today, in the Russian religious environment, attitudes toward sexuality, gender differences and hierarchies, family morality, and similar issues operate as markers of religious identity. It is important to understand how, in the context of the gap between secular and religious perceptions of gender norms, specifically religious gender values are formulated, translated and assimilated; what disciplinary practices, developed by earlier traditions, are promoted and practiced today.
Historians, sociologists, and anthropologists are invited to contribute articles that examine the strategies, practices and ideologies of gender identity and the forms of disciplinary practices in religious communities. Articles devoted to diverse religious traditions are encouraged. We particularly welcome a comparative approach to these topics.
Translation into Russian from other languages is guaranteed by the journal.
The Editorial Board calls for proposals to be submitted no later than September 1, 2017, to the address: religion at rane.ru, as well as to one of the addresses of the invited editors: Nadezhda Belyakova, beliacovana at gmail.com<mailto:beliacovana at gmail.com> and/or Igor Mikeshin, igor.mikeshin at anthro.ru<mailto:igor.mikeshin at anthro.ru>. The application should include (a) the title of the proposed article, (b) an abstract (1200-1500 characters, including spaces) and (c) a short CV.
Deadline for submitting the complete texts: April 1, 2018. The approximate length of the article should be 6000-7000 words. Illustrations are accepted. The bibliographic requirements can be found on the journal's website here: http://religion.rane.ru/?q=ru/for-authors.

Приглашение к публикации


Журнал "Государство, религия и церковь в России и за рубежом" планирует посвятить отдельный выпуск в 2018 г. теме, указанной в заголовке.
Вопросам гендерных стратегий и формам дисциплинирования поведения членов сообществ, особенно их гендерной составляющей, уделяется огромное внимание во всех религиозных культурах. Например, в христианстве обсуждение темы греха немыслимо без упоминания половых девиаций. Каким образом конструируются и воплощаются идеи маскулинности и фемининности, семьи и сексуальности в различных религиозных общинах? Образы <правильного/настоящего мужчины> и <правильной женщины>, идеалы отношений и модели семьи конструируются на основе многих нормативов и негласных предписаний, и запретов. Пространство гендерных стратегий находится под влиянием социальных и политических условий, экклезиологии, герменевтики, подлежит модификациям под давлением конкретных обстоятельств, социальных перемен и культурных сдвигов.
В российской религиозной среде отношение к сексуальности, гендерным различиям и иерархиям, семейной морали являются и сегодня определенными маркерами религиозной идентичности. Представляется важным понимание того, каким образом в условиях разрыва между светскими/секулярными и религиозными представлениями о гендерной норме формулируются, транслируются и усваиваются "религиозные" гендерные ценности, какие дисциплинарные практики были выработаны разными религиозными традициями, и какие из них практикуются сегодня, - изучение этих вопросов представляется важным и перспективным.
К публикации приглашаются историки, социологи, антропологи, рассматривающие на материалах конкретных кейсов стратегии, практики и идеологии формирования гендерной идентичности и формы дисциплинарных практик в религиозных общинах. Принимаются статьи, посвященные разным религиозным традициям. Мы особо приветствуем компаративный подход к указанным темам.
            Редакция предлагает потенциальным участникам выпуска прислать заявку до 1 сентября 2017 г. по адресу редакции: religion at rane.ru<mailto:religion at rane.ru>, а также на один из адресов приглашенных редакторов: Надежды Беляковой beliacovana at gmail.com<mailto:beliacovana at gmail.com> и/или Игоря Микешина igor.mikeshin at anthro.ru<mailto:igor.mikeshin at anthro.ru>. Заявка должна содержать: название предлагаемой статьи, аннотацию (1200-1500 знаков, включая пробелы) и краткий CV автора.
